New panels to augment solar power at railway stations by Joy Sengupta

Several railway stations under the Pune division will soon be able to generate solar power.
"The ministry of railways plans to introduce solar panels at different railway stations. The central railway has been allotted 9.2MW of solar power. Of this, 1.115MW will be generated in the Pune division. We hope that power generation will start by early next year," a railway official said.

Sources from the railway said solar panels will be installed on the overhead sheds of platform number 4, 5 and 6 of the Pune station. This will augment the existing capacity of the station.

"The existing panels were set up in October last year above the reservation building of the station. The electricity generated by these panels power the fans, lights, etc on the station premises," the official said.

Different agencies have been identified for all the divisions where the panels will be set up. "Mytrah Energy India Private Limited has been selected for setting up the panels in the Pune division. This agency will install the infrastructure for solar power generation in various stations across the division. They will ensure steady power generation and the railways will buy it from them according to the agreement," another senior official with the technical department said.

Accordingly Maximintegrated site that published this project describe that Multiple transformers (Halo Electronics TGSP-P145EP10LF, Wurth Electronics 750315882, HanRun HR051075, and Sumida 12387T070) have been qualified for this design, simplifying the process of transformer selection. In addition, through-hole pins on the bottom side of the module allows quick and easy integration of this power converter into the main system. Pins are 0.6in from power to ground, and 2in from the input side to the output side.

The MAX17596 is a peak-current-mode controller for design of wide input-voltage flyback and boost regulators. The reference design operates over a 17V to 36V input voltage range, and provides up to 800mA (plus 20% overhead) at 12V output. The MAX17596 has an internal amplifier with 1% accurate reference, eliminating the need for an external reference. The switching frequency is programmable from 100kHz to 1MHz with an accuracy of 8%, allowing optimization of magnetic and filter components, resulting in compact and cost-effective power conversion. This design is set to switch at 500kHz. For EMI-sensitive applications, the MAX17596 incorporates a programmable frequency dithering scheme, enabling low-EMI spread-spectrum operation.

Engineers at Sandia National Laboratories have developed a first of its kind, 3-D printed technology that makes solar power more powerful.

“What separates Sandia’s research is that we have this one-of-a-kind facility. This is the only ‘power tower’ research facility in the country and there’s only a handful in the world,” said Cliff Ho, a mechanical engineer at Sandia National Labs.

Research and testing at the National Solar Thermal Testing Facility focuses on “concentrating solar power,” which uses a large field of mirrors to generate 20 percent more power than traditional solar power.

“We use lots and lots of mirrors to generate heat and that heat can be stored for use at night or when it’s cloudy, unlike photovoltaics (traditional solar panels) which only produce energy when the sun is shining,” said Ho.

The ability to store energy without the need for expensive batteries is what sets this technology apart from traditional solar power. Ho says in some cases, traditional solar power generates more power than people can use in the middle of the day. Ho says over-generating leads to a waste of electricity.

“If we’re wasting energy, or having to pay people to take it, it’s going to increase the overall price,” said Ho.

Ho says coal is still the cheapest way to produce power. However, in the long run, concentrating solar power will be cheaper than traditional solar power.

Another Indian company which has a substantial renewable energy portfolio is looking to sell off its solar power assets.

Essel Infraprojects, part of the Essel Group, is looking for buyers for its 685 megawatts of solar power capacity, which forms nearly 50% of its overall renewable energy portfolio of 1,400 megawatts. While the company has not specified the reason for this planned sale, it joins several others who have either already sold off or are looking to offload their solar power assets.

Another important commonality in Essel Infraprojects and other sellers is that they are not core power generation companies or renewable energy project developers. Essel Infraprojects has diversified interests and assets in power transmission, transportation, and waste management.

The company currently operates six solar power projects with another six under construction. Several of these projects were won in competitive auctions under central or state governments. It is unclear about the future of other renewable energy projects of the company.

In early 2016, the company had committed to have an operational renewable energy capacity of 12 gigawatts including 7.5 gigawatts of solar, 4 gigawatts of wind, and 500 megawatts of waste-to-energy projects. The company also signed an agreement with the government of Rajasthan to set up  a 5 gigawatt solar power park; no details or developments have been recently reported in this matter.
